Important Instructions for All Candidates

  • Students must arrive at least 30 minutes before the exam time.
  • Valid identification may be requested upon entry.
  • All candidates must come with a pen and a calculator.
  • No mobile phones, smart watches, or electronic devices will be allowed inside the examination hall.
  • Candidates are advised to dress decently and follow all examination hall rules.
  • Late arrival beyond 1:15 PM may lead to disqualification from the exam.

Section A: English Language (30 Marks)

1. Grammar Essentials

Parts of Speech
  • Noun: Name of a person, place, thing or idea.
  • Pronoun: Replaces a noun (he, she, it).
  • Verb: Action or state of being.
  • Adjective: Describes a noun.
  • Adverb: Modifies a verb/adjective.
  • Preposition: Shows relationship (in, on, under).
  • Conjunction: Connecting words (and, but, or).
  • Interjection: Expressions of emotion (wow!).
Tenses
  • Simple present: I eat rice.
  • Simple past: I ate rice yesterday.
  • Present continuous: I am eating rice.
  • Future: I will eat rice tomorrow.
Subject–Verb Agreement
  • Singular subject → singular verb (He goes)
  • Plural subject → plural verb (They go)
  • Collective nouns: The team is ready.
Common Errors:
Wrong: Myself is going. Correct: I am going.
Wrong: She don’t know. Correct: She doesn’t know.

2. Vocabulary

  • Happy ↔ joyful (synonym)
  • Happy ↔ sad (antonym)
Homophones
  • There / Their / They’re

Sentence Completion Example:

3. Comprehension Skills

  • Read the passage twice.
  • Identify main idea, supporting details.
  • Answer strictly from the passage.
  • Watch for keywords like what, why, how.

Section B: Mathematics (30 Marks)

  • Place value: 4,507 → 4 (thousand), 5 (hundreds), 0 (tens), 7 (units)
  • Fractions:
    • Simplify: 12/16 = 3/4
    • Convert to decimal: 3/4 = 0.75

  • Percentage of a number: 20% of 80 = (20/100 × 80) = 16
  • Increase/decrease:
    • Price increases from ₦200 to ₦250
    • Increase = 50 → (50 / 200 × 100) = 25%

  • Ratio 2:3
  • If 2 mangoes cost ₦40, then 3 mangoes cost: (40/2 × 3) = ₦60

  • Solve: 2x + 5 = 15 → 2x = 10 → x = 5
  • Solve: x/4 = 3 → x = 12

  • Perimeter of rectangle = 2(L + W)
  • Area of rectangle = L × W
  • Area of triangle = ½ × base × height
  • Circle: Area = πr², Circumference = 2πr

  • Mean: average
  • Median: middle value
  • Mode: most frequent number
  • Example: 2, 3, 3, 5, 7 → Mode = 3, Mean = 20/5 = 4

Section C: General Science (40 Marks)

1. Biology

  • Cell Biology: Cell is the basic unit of life. Types: Plant and Animal cells. Organelles: nucleus, mitochondria, cell membrane.
  • Human Digestive System: Mouth → Oesophagus → Stomach → Small intestine → Large intestine. Functions: digestion, absorption, elimination.
  • Circulatory System: Heart pumps blood. Arteries (away), Veins (towards), Capillaries (exchange).
  • Reproductive System: Male (testes, penis, sperm), Female (ovaries, uterus, egg).

2. Chemistry

  • States of Matter: Solid, Liquid, Gas.
  • Elements & Compounds: Element (one atom type), Compound (combination), Mixture (separable).
  • Acids, Bases & Salts: Acids (pH < 7), Bases (pH > 7). Neutralization: acid + base → salt + water.

3. Physics

  • Motion: Speed = distance / time.
  • Energy: Forms: heat, electrical, chemical, kinetic, potential. Law: Energy cannot be created or destroyed.
  • Heat: Conduction (solids), Convection (liquids/gases), Radiation (space).

4. Health Sciences

  • Hygiene: Personal and environmental.
  • First Aid: Bleeding control, CPR basics.
  • Disease prevention: Vaccination, sanitation.
  • Nutrition: Balanced diet, food classes.
